Somatic Practices

For experiencing all that you are..

Welcome to The Way of Soma

Soma means "of the Body", somatic practice is rooted in soma, where the body is the wise and all-knowing messenger communicating through the language of sensation.
This sensory language can be experienced within our breath, our bones, within our moving, fluid nature and in the soft expression of stillness
.

The way of Soma is a body of practices born from many years of personal inquiry, practice and training in all things Soma.
In these practices we are brought to a deep and rich relationship with the body.
An intimate experience of being, an embodied awareness that is beautifully grounded in the here and now.

Here you will find details of courses, workshops and retreats,
Further education (yoga alliance certified) and immersions for yoga teachers and therapists.

Jo

I essentially share what I feel has intrinsic value: practices that support, awaken and heal and that, however varied they may appear, all stem from the same roots of a grounded somatic spirituality. I see my role more as a facilitator than a teacher and in that role I support people in establishing a strong relationship with Soma and further down the line hold space for further inquiry in an ever-expanding unique personal journey of embodiment. I am passionate about the art of communicating the whats, whys and possibilities of practice and inquiry and am constantly seeking to clarify, simplify, refine and evolve the ways in which I share. Nothing is static; learning is constant.

Three decades of practice and 23 years of teaching, living with a few chronic health issues and a rather full and diverse life experience inform what I share. I am one of a few Senior Dynamic Yoga Teachers (Godfrey Devereux). I am registered as a senior teacher (1200hrs) and further education provider with the Yoga Alliance and am currently studying somatic movement therapy.

One to one

These sessions provide a safe space for people to rediscover the innate wisdom and wholeness within.

People that seek one-to-one tuition are often (although not exclusively) looking to heal in some way. This work develops a deep relationship with the intelligent natural healing mechanisms of the body and supports a self-healing journey.

I have studied with leading trauma experts and worked closely with people experiencing Trauma (overwhelm), cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic pain, high blood pressure, thyroid imbalance, slipped discs, severe scoliosis, depression, asthma and bereavement.
Sessions are available Online Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Going Deeper - Further Education

In order to evolve as a teacher or facilitator our personal practice needs to be deep and rich, the kind of practice where we are asking lots of questions, engaging in inquiry and challenging our assumptions, committed to clarifying and simplifying. Through teaching practice and personal practice we are building a reservoir of experiential knowledge and yet we need to be as open as possible to the wisdom of our students and be prepared to let go of the known, drop hierarchic patterns and travel down fresh and unfamiliar pathways.
The Being Breathed and “Trauma-Sensitive and Befriending the Nervous system” courses are led from the above perspective, they are not a means to gather lots of second hand knowledge and information. They are an invitation to explore, do a lot of practice, share collectively, integrate what resonates, do the inner work and then explore and refine again and again in your teaching practice.

Going deeper courses are offered on and offline and are accredited with the Yoga Alliance and award you with a 40-hour Further Education Certificate.

They are open for application

Way of Woman

Moving into and through mid-life and  menopause is one of the most significant changes we will experience as women.
How we journey through this time is conditioned by many factors. Cultivating a nurturing and intimate relationship with our bodies can make the difference between a menopause where we experience a multitude of unsettling symptoms or a menopause full of opportunity and renewal. In our 1, 2 and 4 day retreats we hold a nurturing space for women to share, learn and practice together, supporting each other so that we may step into the wisdom of mid-life as strong, empowered embodied women.

See the Way of Woman page to learn more about the complete body of practices incorporated into the Way of Women retreats, events and workshops.

( Jo is Menopause Yoga certified)

“I first was introduced to Jo over 15 years ago. I had recently been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and had decided to pursue yoga as part of my self healing journey. Jo was instrumental in helping me to become more deeply acquainted with myself, through teaching me how to go more deeply into my body; learning to be more present and noticing and listening to what was arising from within.

My health began to improve through my practice with Jo and it led me to appreciate the deep transformative value of her work, so much so, that I went on to study trauma and somatic psychotherapy. Over the years Jo has continued her own journey going deeper into somatic practice. She passes her wisdom and learning’s to her students, so that we can all grow with her. Her passion, intuition and knowledge makes her to me one of the most highly qualified and skilled teachers I have ever had the fortune to practice with”
